OptiLight™ is a new intense pulsed light (IPL) device, with a spectrum of 400-1200 nm, that is indicated for improvement of signs of Dry Eye Disease (DED) due to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), also known as evaporative dry eye or lipid deficiency dry eye, in patients 22 years of age and older with moderate to severe signs and symptoms of DED due to MGD and with Fitzpatrick skin types I-IV. IPL is to be applied only to skin on the malar region of the face, from tragus to tragus including the nose (eyes should be fully covered by protective eyewear). IPL is intended to be applied as an adjunct to other modalities, such as meibomian gland expression, artificial tear lubricants and warm compresses.
It is the first and only intense pulse light (IPL) treatment to be FDA approved for the management of dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction - shown to reduce inflammation, improve tear stability and improve meibomian gland function. A series of 4 treatments performed 3-4 weeks apart with maintenance treatments every 6-12 months is typically recommended.
Evaporative Dry Eye or Meibomian Gland Dysfunction One of the most common forms of “dry eye” is called “evaporative dry eye.” This is a condition in which the tears evaporate more quickly due to a reduced level of oil in tears to lubricate the eyes. Called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, or MGD, this condition could be the result of a block in the gland in the eyelids that produces this critical oil.
IPL for the treatment of MGD associated dry eye disease is FDA approved:
